HEAR FIRST-HAND FROM KIBBUTZ NIR OZ MEMBER AND FATHER OF HOSTAGE
The event has already taken place.
In the first event in the series, Professor Jonathan Dekel-Chen spoke about life as a member of Kibbutz Nir Oz, which is situated on the border with the Gaza Strip. He gave his account of the attack on Nir Oz which resulted in the massacre of dozens of its members, the captivity of many dozens more, including his son Sagui Dekel-Chen, as well as the physical destruction and looting of the kibbutz.
During the talk Jonathan discussed the events that led to Sagui’s capture and the campaign for his safe return. Sagui Dekel-Chen is a cherished JNF UK employee having met the organisation, alongside Jonathan, through the JNF UK supported Bikurim Youth Village for the Arts, a project Jonathan co-founded with his two sons and Tamar Kedem Siman-Tov (tragically murdered with her whole family during the October 7 attack on Nir Oz).
Jonathan is the Rabbi Edward Sandrow Chair in Soviet & East European Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he holds a dual appointment in the Department of Jewish History & Contemporary Jewry and in the Department of General History. Dekel-Chen is a frequent commentator and interviewee on East European affairs and the Middle East for media outlets that include the BBC, AP, Reuters, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, Radio France, the Voice of America and many others.
