Together with one of our partner organisations, Osim Shchuna, JNF UK initiated Operation Ir Miklat (City of Refuge) to clear, clean and fix thousands of shelters in Israel’s Northern towns as thousands of vulnerable citizens have no safe rooms, and communal shelters are unusable after years of neglect.
Shelters and safe rooms are critical to protect families from missiles and terrorists.
From the beginning of the operation until today we have identified over 19,500 shelters.
In the field, we activated over 6000 working days of volunteers. We have cleared, cleaned and painted approximately 3700 shelters and performed electrical work and other work in over 2000 shelters.
We are working against the clock as every single hour counts.
We are also continuing to restore communal shelters in the South.
During the last major conflict in 2021, over eight days, Osim Shchuna and JNF UK gathered 2,000 volunteers across six cities, and restored 600 shelters in Ashdod, Be’er Sheva, Petach Tikva, Rishon Lezion and Bat Yam. At one point, a rocket fell in Ashdod, and tenants were protected in a shelter that had been restored just minutes beforehand.
As a direct result of this work, 20,000 families in the south now have a protective space to shelter them from the horrors of this war.
